about

I recorded "Blue Heaven" with my Chapel Hill area friends, musicians I'd known since the 1970's at Cat's Cradle. Don Dixon and Jack Herrick sketched out arrangements which were refined in the studio. String band instruments, piano, Fender Rhodes, accordion, horns, drums and more were played live acoustically. We all sang some, including Marti Jones and a female trio on vocals. The sound is like a blend of the Red Clay Ramblers and Coastal Cohorts, enhanced by the extra voices and ace players.

If there were a subtitle it might be "Novelties And Notions" as a description of these tunes and the way the Cradle allowed us to experiment back then. I dedicate this record to the memories of Marcia Wilson, who founded the Cradle with Bill Smith and me; David Robert, who taught me how to play "Mr. Bojangles" when we were in college, and later owned the Cradle for a while; and Madelyn Smoak, who played Belle Starr, Queen Of Outlaw Heaven, in Diamond Studs and won hearts South and North sashaying around the stage and singing "I Don't Need A Man To Know I'm Good". Rest In Peace, dear friends.

Jim Wann New York

I’m probably best known for the musical PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES, a Broadway hit in 1982-83 that ran for 577 shows and continued across the country and around the world. But, I've been involved in several productions, collaborated with many talented people, and released some fine records of my own over the last couple of decades.
